Plastic film covering technology

Strawberry cultivation often involves the use of plastic mulch to protect plants during colder months. The timing for applying the film is crucial. After planting in the fall, the mulch is typically applied before winter and again just before early spring budding. In colder regions, it's best to cover the plants when daytime temperatures drop to around 3-5°C. Applying the film too early can cause premature growth, while delaying it may lead to frost damage. For example, in Liaoning and Jilin provinces, this usually happens around late October. In central Hebei, it’s late November, and in central Henan, late December. In warmer areas, the timing can be adjusted accordingly. When applying the mulch, it's recommended to first fertilize with a balanced nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium compound fertilizer. Also, remove any dead or damaged leaves and branches. Choose a calm day without strong winds to lay the film. Ensure the surface is smooth and free of wrinkles, and secure the edges properly. If the rows are long, place stakes or weights at intervals to prevent the film from being lifted by wind. In colder areas, you can add a layer of straw or wheat on top of the film to improve insulation. The process of removing the film should begin after the soil thaws in spring. First, take off any protective materials on top of the mulch, then clear the surface to allow the ground to warm up and encourage earlier sprouting of the strawberries. The ideal time to break the film is when the buds start to appear. To do this, make a small hole in the mulch directly above each plant and gently lift the seedling through the opening. Be careful not to damage the leaves or stems as they pass through the hole. Once the hole is made, press the surrounding area with soil to ensure the mulch stays in place and maintains its effectiveness. It’s important not to delay breaking the film. If the temperature under the film rises above 30°C, it can burn the new leaves and dry out the older ones, reducing their ability to perform photosynthesis. Finally, after the fruit has been harvested, the old plastic film should be removed promptly. Since it doesn’t degrade easily, leaving it in the field can pollute the soil and negatively affect future crop growth. Proper disposal or recycling is essential for maintaining healthy agricultural practices.
