Fresh sesame flowers

After years of working with experienced mushroom growers, it has become clear that cultivating black fungus using fresh distiller’s grains requires careful attention to five key technical aspects. These methods have been tested and refined over time, and are now shared here for the benefit of edible mushroom farmers looking to improve their yields and profitability. First, it is essential to pre-dry the distiller’s grains a week in advance. Spread them on a concrete floor or plastic sheeting, turning them regularly to ensure even drying and to eliminate any strong odors. Once the impurities are removed, mix about 4% lime powder by dry weight to neutralize the acidity, making the material more suitable for fungal growth. Second, the culture formula must be carefully balanced. The lignin content should not be too low, so wood chips should be added to support mycelium growth and provide good aeration. The following formulas are recommended: 1) 77% sorghum or rice/wheat distiller’s grains, 5% rice bran or bran, 15% sawdust, plus 1% superphosphate, gypsum, and lime. 2) 77% barley or broken rice distiller’s grains, 20% sawdust, plus 1% of the other additives. 3) 77% sorghum distiller’s grains, 15% bran, 5% sawdust, again with 1% of the additional ingredients. The moisture content should be maintained between 60% and 65%. Third, when bagging the material, use 17cm x 33cm polyethylene bags. Make sure the material is loosely packed, gently pressing it from the top 6–8 cm without compressing it too tightly. Secure the bag with a rope. Because distiller’s grains often contain thermophilic bacteria, thorough sterilization is crucial. Use the atmospheric pressure secondary batch method: after steaming for 4 hours, let it cool to 30°C, then reheat to 100°C every 1–2 days for another 4 hours. This ensures effective sterilization. Fourth, once the temperature drops to 30°C, proceed with inoculation in a clean environment. Afterward, move the bags to a room-temperature area. During this phase, monitor the temperature and humidity closely. If any contamination is detected—such as bacterial spots—remove the affected bags immediately and inject 0.2% carbendazim solution into the contaminated areas to prevent further spread. Finally, during the fruiting stage, the surface of the culture material is prone to contamination. If any signs of germs appear, remove the affected material along with the surrounding substrate, or apply concentrated lime water to disinfect the area. Ventilate the growing area 2–3 times daily and mist the air 2–3 times to maintain a relative humidity of 85–90%. With proper management, it's possible to harvest around 100–120 kg of fresh black fungus per 100 kg of distiller’s grains. This technique offers a promising opportunity for farmers to increase income and improve their livelihoods. It is definitely worth adopting and promoting.
