International Transradial Cardiovascular Disease Intervention Training Training Center was established
On January 7, 2007, the International Transradial Cardiovascular Interventional Therapy Training Center was officially launched in Beijing Anzhen Hospital, marking a significant milestone in China’s cardiovascular field. This event coincided with the 2007 International Symposium on Interventional Therapy for Cardiovascular Diseases, highlighting the growing importance of transradial interventional techniques in modern medicine.
The establishment of this training center represents a major step forward in promoting and popularizing transradial intervention across the country. The procedure, which involves accessing the radial artery in the arm rather than the femoral artery in the leg, has gained popularity due to its numerous advantages. It reduces vascular complications, allows patients to walk out of the operating room immediately after the procedure, and eliminates the need for prolonged bed rest.
Professor Zhou Yujie, who leads one of the pioneering centers for transradial interventions at Beijing Anzhen Hospital, emphasized that this method significantly improves patient comfort and lowers medical costs. Patients no longer require a wheelchair or a flatbed cart, and they can often be discharged within 24 hours if their coronary angiography is normal. This not only reduces hospitalization expenses but also minimizes the burden on families and healthcare resources.
Moreover, the transradial approach is particularly beneficial for patients with chronic back conditions who cannot tolerate long periods of lying down. It also avoids the need for post-operative catheterization, making it a more comfortable and practical option for many individuals.
Compared to the traditional transfemoral approach, which requires two contrast Catheters, the transradial technique uses just one, further reducing costs and resource usage. Despite the technical challenges posed by the smaller size of the radial artery, Professor Zhou noted that the benefits far outweigh the difficulties, as the procedure is both safe and effective.
As the first training center dedicated to transradial interventional therapy in China, the center aims to standardize practices, improve skills, and shorten the learning curve for doctors. It will provide a platform for continuous education, develop guidelines, and establish a national database to support evidence-based advancements in this field.
At the symposium, leading international experts exchanged knowledge with Chinese specialists, showcasing the latest developments in transradial intervention. The event also included participation from medical professionals in western China, underscoring the growing national interest in this innovative treatment method.
