Ways to increase dairy milk production in winter
In the first 60 days of a dairy cow's lactation period, it's important to maintain stability. Avoid making sudden changes or increasing feed during this time. Keep the lighting in the barn consistent at 16 hours per day, as this can help improve milk yield by more than 10% compared to natural light conditions.
Supplementing with carotene can also boost milk production. Adding 7 grams of carotene preparations 30 days before and after milking can result in an additional 200 kg of milk per cow throughout the lactation period.
Feeding cows potassium-rich diets is another effective strategy. Potassium makes up 20-40% of the cow’s daily intake that ends up in milk. By including potassium-rich feeds, milk production can increase by 5-10%.
Adding baking soda to the diet can enhance milk yield as well. Feeding 100 grams of baking soda per cow daily during lactation helps bring on peak milk production earlier and maintains high levels for up to seven months. When combined with a ration containing 40% roughage, 60% concentrate, 1.5% baking soda, and 0.8% magnesium oxide, milk output increases by 3.8 kg per day.
Incorporating nitrogen and sulfur into the feed can also improve results. Mixing urea and alkali water in a 1:2 ratio and spraying it onto green corn stalks used for silage—using 5 kg of urea and 0.5 kg of alkali nitrate per ton of silage—can raise milk production by 7.3 to 10.3%.
Phosphogypsum, which contains calcium sulfate along with trace elements like potassium, sodium, and iron, can also be beneficial. Adding 71.5 grams of phosphogypsum to each cow’s daily diet can increase milk yield by 1.7%, while reducing the amount of feed needed per kilogram of milk produced by 11.4%.
Increasing salt content in dry feed and ensuring access to warm water can further support milk production. Adding 0.18-0.24% salt to the feed and keeping drinking water above 17°C can lead to a 10% increase in milk output.
Finally, encouraging regular exercise can also help. Allowing cows to move freely for about an hour during the midday when the sun is out and temperatures are higher can stimulate better milk production. This simple practice not only supports physical health but also contributes to overall productivity.
