Artificial propagation of salmon fry in autumn
First, select mature fish weighing over 500 grams. For female squid, look for those with a swollen and soft abdomen, redness and swelling around the anus and genital openings, and signs of congestion. Male squid should release white seminal fluid when their abdomen is gently pressed, and they should not show any swelling around the anus.
Second, ensure a good pairing of males and females with a ratio of 1:5 to 1:7. A higher number of males can help trigger spawning in females more quickly.
Third, prepare the spawning environment. Place the male and female fish in a fish bowl filled with water, and add a fish nest. Position the fish so that their backs are about 3 cm below the water surface to take advantage of temperature differences and gentle water flow, which stimulate spawning. If 2 ml of 50% glucose is injected at the base of each pectoral fin of the female, it can significantly improve the spawning effect.
Fourth, incubation instructions. The water in the spawning and hatching pools should not be too rich or oily. Excess nutrients can cause floating heads, prevent spawning, or lead to poor egg development. Use fresh water in both spawning and hatching areas to maintain good water circulation. The ideal water temperature ranges from 18°C to 22°C. Oxygenation can be achieved using fibrous roots, avoiding any materials like daffodil pulp. Trim stems and leaves to prevent them from sticking to eggs and causing sunburn. Also, make sure to prevent male squid from eating the eggs to increase hatchability.
Fifth, use artificial aphrodisiacs for the female squid. This method helps females spawn on time and increases ovulation rates. During the breeding season, inject 50% glucose solution into the base of the pectoral fins of mature female squid. Insert the needle at a 45-degree angle, and administer 3–5 ml per fish depending on its size. After injection, place the female in the spawning pool and pair her with two male squid. The spawning pool can be used with domestic fish oysters to maintain microfluidic stimulation. Spawning typically occurs between 10 to 15 hours after injection, and the ovulation rate can increase by approximately 40% compared to natural spawning. Female squid lay sticky eggs, which need to be attached to a substrate. Use sessile narcissus roots or aquatic grasses as spawning nests. Once the eggs are laid, place the nests into tanks with cleared small fish larvae to protect them.
