Product Rex Rabbit Fattening Technique

Rex rabbit skin has become a popular choice among suede raw materials due to its exceptional qualities. It features a soft, velvety texture with a rich cashmere-like feel, making it highly desirable for premium products. This quality not only meets market demands but also helps in distinguishing high-quality fur and building a strong sense of craftsmanship.

When it comes to slaughtering rabbits for commercial use, two main criteria are considered: the size of the hide and the maturity of the fur. These factors are closely linked to the rabbit's weight and age, which means that proper feeding and management play a crucial role in achieving the best results.

First and foremost, start with healthy rabbits. Before breeding, always choose high-quality stock from reliable sources. Don’t just go by the name or species—make sure you’re getting the right rabbits. Without good genetics, it’s impossible to produce top-tier Rex rabbit products. In the end, poor choices can lead to wasted time, money, and effort.

Next, focus on early weight gain. A rabbit’s growth rate is heavily influenced by how quickly it gains weight during the early stages. The development of hair follicles, which determines coat density, is also closely tied to this period. Therefore, ensuring that weanlings reach at least 500 grams and that they weigh over 2 kilograms by three months is one of the most critical phases in raising rabbits.

Then, implement a controlled feeding strategy. This method is essential for raising high-quality rabbits. Not only does it help reduce feed costs, but it also enhances fur quality and overall profitability. The concept involves adjusting nutrition levels at different stages. From weaning until three months, provide a diet with around 18% protein. Use full-portion Rex rabbit pellets freely to maximize genetic potential, increasing both coat density and weight. After this phase, introduce a controlled feeding plan: first, reduce protein content to about 16% while still allowing free access to food; second, limit daily intake to approximately 80% of what would be freely available, without changing the feed quality.

Another important step is castrating male rabbits. Since Rex rabbits reach sexual maturity between 3 to 4 months, it’s best to castrate males at 2.5 to 3 months. This makes them easier to manage and improves overall growth performance.

Finally, ensure timely slaughter. The timing depends on the season, the rabbit’s weight, and population density. Under normal conditions, rabbits should be slaughtered when they reach 5 months of age, weighing at least 2.75 kilograms. At this stage, the fur should be thick, plush, and of the highest quality, making it ideal for processing into premium suede products.
