Golden silk jujube opening method
The optimal time to open the golden silk jujube tree is at the beginning of full bloom, when most of the fruiting branches on the tree have opened 4-5 flowers. The process should be completed before the flowering reaches 30% of the total flower buds. During this period, the tree tends to produce more fruits and has a higher chance of successful fruit set.
The opening should be done on the main trunk, approximately 20–30 cm above the ground. Each year, the new cut should be made about 10 cm above the previous one. The technique involves cutting through the bark in a specific pattern: first, remove the old bark by twisting the trunk, exposing the pink cambium layer. Then, use a sharp knife to make two parallel cuts in the phloem, deep enough to reach the xylem, with a spacing of about 0.5 cm between them. Finally, carefully remove the strip of phloem, exposing the xylem beneath.
The width of the cut depends on the tree’s health and age. Mature trees can tolerate wider cuts—0.5–0.7 cm—while weaker or younger trees require narrower cuts, around 0.3–0.4 cm. The operation must be done carefully to ensure the cut is smooth, even, and free of irregularities. All the phloem should be removed cleanly, without leaving any remnants. The upper and lower edges of the cut should still be attached to the xylem, avoiding cracks or damage. Additionally, the knife should be held straight, with the lower edge slightly angled upward, so that the cut slopes downward to prevent water accumulation.
After making the cut, apply a solution of 25% monocrotophos pesticide diluted 50–100 times directly into the wound to protect against pests like the nail beetle. This treatment should be repeated every five days for three applications. About 20 days after the opening, the fruit set usually stabilizes. At this point, cover the wound with a mixture of mud to help it heal and reduce the risk of infection. This careful procedure ensures better fruit production and long-term tree health.
