Processing methods and techniques for reducing fragrance

(1) Harvesting and Processing 1. Harvesting Aroma harvesting can be done throughout the year. After cutting the scented trunks, the remaining parts are usually shortened to about 50 cm. In recent years, in order to protect aromatic resources, leftover materials such as wood scraps, tree tops, and roots from logging have been collected for further use. This helps reduce waste and ensures sustainable resource management. 2. Processing (1) On-site Processing: The bark is removed from the trunk, separating the outer bark from the sapwood (the white part). The heartwood is then cut into small pieces and left to dry naturally. Alternatively, the wood can be dried along with the leftover scraps. (2) Further Preparation: The raw material is cleaned to remove dead wood and impurities, especially the sapwood that lies outside the heartwood. A 1 cm long piece is cut and then sliced into strips of 1 cm in length and 1.5–2 mm in width. These strips are soaked in clean water for one hour to remove any residual substances. Afterward, they are placed in a steamer and steamed for another hour. Once removed, they are dried thoroughly. When ready for use, the material can be chopped or ground into powder. (B) Medicinal Properties and Product Specifications 1. Origin Processing (1) Hainan Incense: Also known as Dalbergia japonicus in Hainan Province, this incense typically has a cylindrical or irregular shape, with varying lengths and sizes. The surface is reddish-brown with a slight sheen. It often shows knife marks and longitudinal lines. The wood is dense and hard, capable of sinking in water and resisting breakage. When split, the cross-section appears rough and uneven, showing signs of oiliness. When burned, it produces black smoke, emits a strong fragrance, and leaves behind white ash. It has a distinct bitter taste and a slight gas-like odor. (2) True Incense: This variety is irregularly cylindrical, with variable sizes and dark red or purple outer layers. It frequently contains decayed wood, raised nodules, and longitudinal grooves or cracks. The cross-section is dark red or purple with a glossy finish. When burned, it releases oil and emits a rich, pleasant aroma, leaving behind white ash. 2. Product Specifications The medicinal herb known as "Rugia" is categorized under EC goods. The standard is based on its medicinal properties. High-quality products should not contain dead wood, should be heavy, have a deep purple-brown color, be rich in oil, and emit a strong, pleasant aroma when burned. (C) Packaging and Storage Medicinal materials are bundled and sealed with Puxi paper. They should be stored in cool, dry places to prevent moisture and mold. Processed incense is packed in wooden boxes and kept in dry storage areas to maintain quality and potency over time.
