Processing methods and techniques for reducing fragrance

(1) Harvesting and Processing 1. Harvesting Aroma harvesting can be done throughout the year. After cutting the scented trunks, the remaining parts are usually shortened to about 50 cm in length. In recent years, to protect aromatic resources, most leftover materials used for making woodware have been collected. Additionally, tree stumps and roots left after logging are also gathered for further use. 2. Processing (1) On-site Processing: The bark is removed from the trunk, separating the outer bark from the sapwood (the white part). The heartwood is then cut into small pieces and allowed to dry naturally. Alternatively, wood scraps can be dried along with the main pieces. (2) Further Preparation: The raw material is first cleaned to remove any dead wood or impurities, especially the sapwood that is not desired. The heartwood is then cut into 1 cm long cylindrical sections and further sliced into strips of 1 cm in length and 1.5–2 mm in width. These strips are soaked in clean water for one hour to remove any residual substances. They are then steamed for an hour, dried, and stored. When ready for use, they can be chopped or ground into powder. (B) Medicinal Properties and Product Specifications 1. Origin Processing (1) Hainan Incense: Also known as Dalbergia japonicus, this incense is typically cylindrical or irregular in shape, varying in size and length. The surface is reddish-brown or dark red with a slight luster. The product often shows knife marks and long grooves. The wood is dense and hard, capable of sinking in water and resisting breakage. When split, the cross-section is rough and uneven, showing visible oiliness. When burned, it produces black smoke, emits a strong fragrance, and leaves behind white ash. It has a slightly bitter taste and a distinct aroma. (2) True Incense: This variety is irregularly cylindrical, with varying sizes and dark red or purple outer layers. It often contains decayed parts, raised knots, longitudinal grooves, and cracks. The cross-section is dark red or purple with a glossy appearance. When burned, it releases oil, has a rich fragrance, and leaves white ash. 2. Product Specifications The medicinal herbs are classified under EC goods. The standard is based on their medicinal value. High-quality products should not contain dead wood, should be heavy, have a deep purple-brown color, be rich in oils, and emit a strong fragrance when burned. (C) Packaging and Storage Medicinal materials are bundled and sealed with Puxi paper. They should be stored in cool and dry places to prevent moisture and mold. Processed incense is packed in wooden boxes and kept in dry storage areas to maintain quality.
