In the summer, we must keep four "off."
In summer, temperatures can rise between 35°C and 42°C, which poses a challenge for the yellow peony, as its maximum heat tolerance is around 38°C. To keep the environment comfortable, three effective cooling methods are recommended. First, shading structures such as arbors can be built directly above Chengchi Lake. These can be made using climbing plants like lentils or loofah, or by covering them with straw curtains. However, the coverage should not be too dense to allow some sunlight to reach the water, ensuring the aquatic environment remains healthy. Second, floating aquatic plants like water hyacinths and water lettuce can be added to the lake surface to provide additional shade. It's important to limit their coverage to no more than half of the water surface to avoid blocking too much light. Third, water changes are essential. Raising the water level by 25–30 cm during hot days helps regulate temperature. When the temperature exceeds 38°C, replacing the top layer of water can help balance the overall pool temperature. Another highly effective method is to use microfluidic systems, where water is continuously circulated in and out throughout the day, offering the best cooling results.
Regarding feeding, maintaining clean and fresh food is crucial, especially for animal-based feeds. Avoid feeding spoiled or old food to prevent health issues. The diet should be high in protein, including options like quail, mealworms, and fly larvae, to support growth and vitality. Feeding amounts must also be carefully controlled. Provide just enough food that the yellow peony can consume within a day. If weather conditions are poor, reduce the feed quantity accordingly, and always remove any leftover bait promptly to prevent it from rotting and polluting the water.
Water pH is another critical factor. During summer, the pH of the pond water should be kept between 7 and 7.8. If the water becomes too acidic over time, adding quicklime can help adjust the pH levels effectively.
Lastly, preventing escape is vital, especially during sudden weather changes in summer. These fluctuations can cause discomfort for the yellow peony, making it restless and more likely to try to escape—especially at night. During thunderstorm seasons, regular checks on water depth, pool walls, and the bottom are necessary. Ensure that drainage hole covers are intact and free of damage. Promptly address any potential escape routes to keep the yellow peony safe and secure in its habitat.
