Animal husbandry must be guarded against "grasshoppers"

When livestock such as cows, horses, sheep, and pigs consume grass fodder or accidentally swallow entire crops, the fibrous material can become lodged in their esophagus and fail to pass down. This condition is commonly referred to as "grass weed" or "plant impaction." If not treated promptly, it can lead to serious health issues. In severe cases, animals like cattle, horses, sheep, and pigs may even die. **Symptoms of "Grass Weed"** Animals suffering from this condition often suddenly stop eating, shake their heads and necks, drool excessively, and repeatedly attempt to vomit or swallow. Their conjunctiva (the lining of the eye) becomes dark red, their heart rate increases, and they show signs of restlessness or discomfort. **First Aid Measures** If you suspect your animal has a "grass weed," stay calm and take the following steps immediately: 1. If the blockage is in the front part of the esophagus, gently grasp the animal’s mouth and try to pull out the obstruction with your hands. 2. If the blockage is in the middle of the esophagus, administer 150 ml of vegetable oil, then manually push the blockage toward the throat and remove it through the mouth. 3. Use a short rein to hold the animal's left front leg and encourage it to lower its head as much as possible. Then guide the animal up and down a slope several times, helping the object slide into the stomach. 4. First, pour a small amount of vegetable oil into the animal’s mouth, then insert a rigid hose into the esophagus through the nostril and carefully push the blockage into the stomach. 5. After removing the foreign object, you can give the animal a mixture of 500 grams of white wine, 150–250 grams of kerosene, and 1000 grams of vinegar to help break down any remaining material and soothe the digestive tract. It's important to act quickly and carefully during these procedures. If the situation worsens or doesn't improve, consult a veterinarian immediately for further assistance. Prevention is also key—ensure that feed is properly prepared and that animals are not left unattended near areas where they might ingest large amounts of fibrous plant material.
