Pigs fed four grass summer less

For many years, the practice of raising pigs has shown that incorporating certain wild plants into their diet during summer not only helps reduce feed costs but also improves their health and growth. Commonly used plants include purslane, dandelion, plantain, and gentian grass. These natural feeds enhance pigs’ appetite, stabilize their temperament, improve skin condition, and promote faster weight gain with fewer health issues. 1. **Portulaca oleracea (Purslane)**: This is a favorite among pigs and is widely available across the country. It has a sour and cooling nature, making it suitable for both fresh and dried use. When added to pig feed as 2% to 8% dry powder, or 60 to 120 grams of fresh purslane per day, it helps clear heat, cool the blood, stop bleeding, and relieve phlegm. It also has strong antibacterial properties against bacteria such as dysentery bacillus, E. coli, typhoid, and paratyphoid. It can help prevent and treat conditions like whooping cough, tuberculosis, uterine bleeding, and has a stimulating effect on smooth muscles and a diuretic function. 2. **Dandelion**: Known for its tender texture and high nutritional value, dandelion is a versatile and beneficial feed for pigs. Whether fresh or dried, it can be added at a rate of 2% to 3% in pig feed. It helps clear heat, reduce swelling, detoxify, and support digestion and spleen function. Dandelion stimulates appetite and promotes healthy growth. It’s especially effective in preventing and treating digestive and respiratory diseases, including swine streptococcosis. 3. **Plantain Grass**: A perennial herb found throughout China, plantain is rich in mucus, succinate, and choline, which have diuretic and detoxifying effects. It can be fed fresh or processed into dry powder and added at 3% to 5%. Regular feeding helps prevent and treat inflammation, hematuria, skin conditions, and respiratory issues. It is also beneficial in managing fever and rickets in pigs. 4. **Gentian**: A hardy perennial herb commonly found across China, gentian is harvested in summer and autumn. It contains compounds that stimulate gastric acid secretion and improve digestion. Feeding pigs gentian regularly increases their appetite and supports better nutrient absorption. By integrating these natural plants into pig diets, farmers can achieve cost-effective, healthy, and sustainable livestock management.
