High temperature stuffy shed disinfection

High-temperature solar disinfection is a popular method used in greenhouses during the summer months, typically from early July to late August. This technique involves sealing the greenhouse and utilizing the intense heat from the sun along with chemical fumigation to effectively sterilize the soil. It is an economical, environmentally friendly, and easy-to-implement approach that has gained widespread acceptance among farmers due to its effectiveness and simplicity.

The process begins with proper soil preparation. The ground should be leveled and finely tilled, and organic fertilizers such as chicken manure or dried cow dung can be incorporated into the soil. These materials not only help kill bacteria but also aid in raising and maintaining the soil temperature, enhancing the overall sterilization effect. After the soil is well-prepared, it can be shaped into ridges or mounds based on the crop's planting pattern, creating small air pockets between the mulch and the soil surface, which further helps increase the ground temperature.

Next comes irrigation. The moisture content of the soil plays a crucial role in the success of this method. If the soil is too wet, it hinders heat retention, while if it's too dry, it reduces the effectiveness of the sterilization. Research has shown that the best results are achieved when the soil moisture reaches approximately 60% of its field capacity. This balance ensures optimal heat transfer and microbial control.

Then, a chemical treatment is applied. Chloropicrin is commonly used for soil fumigation. Small holes are dug every 50 cm², about 10–15 cm deep, and 4 ml of chloropicrin is poured into each hole. Before sealing the greenhouse, the entire structure should be sprayed with a combination of bactericides and insecticides to eliminate any pathogens or pests hiding in the walls and corners.

Afterward, the greenhouse is tightly sealed using double-layer plastic coverings to maintain high internal temperatures. Under these conditions, the ground temperature at 10 cm depth can reach up to 70°C, and at 20 cm depth, it can exceed 45°C. This level of heat is highly effective, achieving a sterilization rate of over 80%.

The duration of the disinfection process varies depending on the type of pathogen. Most common pathogens, such as bacterial infections, cucumber botrytis, and eggplant yellow wilt, can be eliminated within 10 days. However, more resilient pathogens like those causing root rot, clubroot, or fusarium wilt may require 30–50 days of treatment due to their deeper soil distribution. Therefore, the exact time should be adjusted based on the specific crops and their associated diseases.

Finally, after the disinfection period, it's important not to deeply till the soil, as this could bring hidden pathogens back to the surface. Ideally, plowing should be limited to a depth of 10 cm. Although this method does not completely sterilize the soil, it significantly reduces the microbial load, leading to fewer plant diseases. The effects of this disinfection can last up to two years, making it a practical solution to be performed once a year.
