Why cherry tomato white spot
In recent weeks, many cherry tomato growers have reported the appearance of white lesions on their crops, which has significantly impacted both the growth of the plants and the marketability of the fruit. Experts are currently investigating the issue and suspect it may be caused by a physiological calcium deficiency. However, further confirmation is still needed to determine the exact cause.
The symptoms typically appear on both green and red fruits, with white spots forming symmetrically on either side of the fruit. These lesions do not affect the pulp; instead, they only appear as a thin layer of white skin on the surface. The affected areas lack color and do not show signs of rot or softness.
To better understand the problem, experts have analyzed potential causes. One key factor is inconsistent water supply during the late growth stage of the plant. When water is irregular—especially after periods of drought—the leaves tend to transpire a large amount of water, competing with the fruit for moisture. This can lead to reduced water availability in the fruit's pulp, hindering its development. Another contributing factor is the plant’s inability to absorb sufficient calcium and boron from the soil, leading to internal nutrient imbalances. This imbalance disrupts the physiological functions of the pulp cells, causing them to lose their ability to regulate water properly, ultimately affecting fruit growth.
To prevent and manage this issue, several effective measures can be taken. First, ensure consistent and adequate watering, especially during the later stages of fruiting. Watering should be done between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., when the temperature is moderate and evaporation is minimized. Second, choose disease-resistant cherry tomato varieties that are less prone to such issues. Third, use shade nets during midday when sunlight is intense, helping to reduce heat stress on the plants.
Additionally, applying organic or bio-organic fertilizers can improve soil health and nutrient availability. A balanced fertilization strategy based on soil testing is also recommended. To directly address the calcium deficiency, farmers can spray a diluted amino acid solution (200–300 times) combined with calcium supplements. It’s important to apply these treatments consistently, ideally every 15 days for a total of three applications. At the same time, spraying for umbilical rot prevention is advised to protect the fruit from additional damage.
By implementing these strategies, growers can effectively reduce the occurrence of white lesions and improve the overall quality and yield of their cherry tomato crops.
