The main component of the pump is, of course, the pump itself. During operation, it's normal for the pump to experience some wear and tear, which may lead to malfunctions or reduced performance. If you notice that the pump isn't pumping properly, it's important to address the issue promptly by repairing or adjusting it. Common reasons for a pump failing to draw in water or discharge it include a stuck foot valve, a partially clogged filter, excessive suction height, or leakage in the suction line. It could also be due to incorrect rotation direction, blocked impeller passages, or other internal obstructions. Once the cause is identified, you can take specific actions such as repairing the foot valve, clearing blockages, adjusting the rotation, or cleaning the impeller. Leaks in the piping are often caused by improper installation, where connections aren’t tightened sufficiently. For minor leaks, you can apply cement mixed with asphalt oil, use wet mud, or even soft soap temporarily. If there’s a leak at a joint, tightening the nut with a wrench might help. However, if the leak is serious, the system must be completely reinstalled. Overheating of the packing can occur due to excessive pressure, lack of cooling water, or damage to the shaft surface. In such cases, loosen the packing slightly, clean any blockages, and replace worn-out packing. Before installation, it's advisable to soak the packing in oil, load it in a circular pattern, and stagger the joints to minimize leakage. After the last ring is installed, make sure the cover is securely fastened and adjust the tightness after startup. Severe vibration in the pump can result from an unbalanced motor rotor, misaligned coupling, worn bearings, bent shafts, loose or broken rotating parts, or unstable pipe supports. These issues can be resolved through adjustment, repair, reinforcement, straightening, or replacement. When it comes to impeller damage—such as broken blades or pitting caused by cavitation—the best solution is to replace it or apply a carbide coating. If the impeller isn't too worn, it can also be repaired by pouring. To disassemble, first secure the impeller to the pump shaft, loosen the nut or the device's head screw, then gradually pull out the ejector pin. Finally, remove the shaft from the housing and take the impeller for repair. For pump shaft defects, such as bending due to shock loads, over-tightened belts, or improper installation, you can use a manual screw jack to correct minor bends, but avoid applying too much force. If the shaft cracks or breaks, it can be welded, forged, or replaced, and then heat-treated and machined to restore its function. Regular maintenance and timely repairs are essential to ensure the pump operates efficiently and lasts longer.
