The common agricultural pump failures

The small agricultural water pump is a crucial device used for irrigation and drainage in rural areas, especially during spring and summer planting seasons. However, due to prolonged use or improper operation, it's common for the pump to experience malfunctions or damage, which can prevent it from functioning properly. Therefore, it's essential to promptly repair and adjust the pump to eliminate any issues and ensure its continued performance. One of the most common problems is that the pump fails to start. First, check the power supply: make sure the wiring connections are secure, the switch contacts are tight, and the fuse is intact. Also, verify if the three-phase power is balanced. If there's an open circuit, poor contact, blown fuse, or phase loss, identify and fix the issue immediately. Next, inspect the pump itself for mechanical problems. Common causes include overly tight packing, debris jamming the impeller, rusted components like the shaft, bearings, or leakage rings, or a bent pump shaft. To resolve this, loosen the packing, clean the impeller, disassemble and remove rust, or replace the damaged shaft. Overheating of the motor supporting the pump can be caused by several factors. First, power supply issues such as high or low voltage, unbalanced three-phase voltage, or phase loss can lead to overheating. If the voltage deviates beyond +10% to -5%, or if the three-phase voltage imbalance exceeds 5%, the motor may overheat. Phase loss is particularly dangerous, as more than 85% of agricultural motor failures result from it. Second, pump-related issues such as mismatched power, excessive load, or frequent starting can also cause overheating. Third, internal motor problems like incorrect wiring, winding faults, rotor damage, or poor ventilation can lead to serious overheating. Finally, environmental factors such as high temperature, humidity, or dust accumulation on the windings can reduce insulation and increase heat. Regular maintenance, cleaning, and proper installation can help mitigate these issues. It's important to note that if electrical faults are involved, only a qualified electrician should perform repairs. Attempting to fix electrical issues without proper training can lead to serious safety risks. Another issue is pump overheating, which can occur due to bearing damage, tight clearance, misaligned shafts, tight belts, poor lubrication, or blocked balance holes in the impeller. To address this, replace the bearings, adjust the clearance, straighten the shaft, loosen the belt, add clean grease, and clear any blockages. Low flow rates can result from mismatched speed, belt slippage, improper blade angle, long or obstructed pipelines, high suction lift, or partial blockages in the impeller or pipeline. Adjust the belt tension, reposition the pump, shorten the pipeline, or replace damaged parts to restore normal flow. If the pump cannot draw water, it might be due to air in the system, a faulty bottom valve, a leaking vacuum seal, or improperly closed valves. To fix this, prime the pump, check for leaks in the piping, tighten connections, and replace worn seals if necessary. Severe vibration often stems from imbalanced rotors, faulty couplings, worn bearings, or loose or broken rotating parts. These issues can be resolved through adjustment, repair, reinforcement, or replacement. Regular inspection and maintenance are key to ensuring the reliable operation of agricultural water pumps. By addressing these common issues promptly, farmers can maintain efficient irrigation and drainage systems, improving crop yields and reducing downtime.
