Sticky bait feeding fish method
Fishery drugs are applied in aquatic environments, and their effectiveness is often influenced by various factors. Even with highly efficient fish medicines, improper usage can lead to unsatisfactory results. In some cases, delayed treatment may even cause adverse effects. Common methods of drug administration include soaking, hanging, bagging, oral feeding (mixed with feed), injection, applying directly on the fish, and clearing the pond. However, one particularly effective method is the "sticky bait technique."
Sticky baits are made from a viscous starch base, allowing for precise delivery of medication directly to the fish. The preferred starches include wheat flour, sweet potato starch, glutinous rice starch, and artichoke starch. Mung bean and broad bean starches can also be used. Typically, about 1/5 or 1/6 of the fishery medicine is mixed into the starch, then combined with water to form a paste. This mixture is shaped into small pellets that fish can easily swallow.
When preparing the baits, it's important to consider several factors. Fish have a highly sensitive sense of smell, so the presence of the drug’s odor might deter them from eating. To counter this, aromatic spices like star anise or clove powder can be added to mask the scent. If possible, drain the pond slightly to create shallow water conditions, which helps reduce the amount of medicine needed and encourages higher bait consumption. Using a net to separate fish ensures that both large and small fish, as well as those floating at the surface or near the bottom, get equal access to the bait.
For disease prevention, it's recommended to first offer regular feed to healthy fish and surface-dwelling species, then introduce the medicated bait. This allows weaker or less active fish to consume more of the bait. During treatment, however, the medicated bait should be given first to ensure that healthy and newly infected fish receive the full dose, maximizing the drug’s effectiveness.
Medicated baits can be combined with both traditional Chinese and Western medicines. For instance, mixing sulfa drugs with herbal remedies has shown improved therapeutic outcomes. When administering the bait, it’s best to choose a sunny day with warm water, as this enhances the absorption and efficacy of the medication.
This method not only improves the accuracy of drug delivery but also minimizes environmental impact and reduces the risk of overuse. It’s a practical and efficient approach that supports better fish health and sustainable aquaculture practices.
