Japan Develops Transgenic Rice Rich in Nutrient-Coenzyme

The research team led by Mizuo Tomaki of the Japan Institute of Agricultural Bioresources recently developed rice containing the “CoQ10, a coenzyme protecting the heart,” which was the first time in the world to synthesize this substance without chemical means, but it has been produced in plants by genetic means. The so-called coenzyme itself is not an enzyme, but the biochemical reactions of many enzymes must be performed in the presence of coenzymes. The related products including “Coenzyme Nutrient CoQ10” are currently hot nutritious products and allegedly have antioxidant and anti-fatigue effects. According to a report by Kyodo News, the researchers extracted genes from the Gluconobacter species to produce CoQ10, which was used to protect the heart, and then transplanted the gene into rice. The results showed that compared with normal rice, the heart-protecting coenzyme was used in transgenic rice. The content of CoQ10" is up to 18 times higher. However, the researchers said that because the new method is used to obtain genetically modified foods, it still takes time to approve the planting. Therefore, it will take time for the research results to be truly transformed into commodities.
