Pond fish feed feed determination method

Accurately determining the amount of feed given to fish is essential for successful aquaculture. It ensures that fish are well-fed without causing unnecessary waste, which helps maintain both fish health and economic efficiency. While most fish farmers understand the timing, quality, and fixed feeding points in the "Four Ding" approach, the concept of portion control remains unclear. To help improve this understanding, we present several practical methods for calculating the right amount of feed for pond fish. Method One: Calculate the annual, monthly, and daily feeding amounts based on fish weight gain and the feed conversion ratio. (1) Annual Feeding Amount: This is calculated by multiplying the net weight gain of the fish by the feed coefficient. Typically, the net weight gain is between 4 to 5 times the initial stock, and the feed coefficient for full-price compound feed ranges from 2 to 2.5, while mixed feed may require 3 to 3.5. If different feeds are used alternately, calculate each separately and add them together for the total annual amount. (2) Monthly Feeding Amount: The distribution varies throughout the year. For example, March accounts for about 1%, April for 4%, May for 8%, and June for 15% of the annual total. From July to September, each month receives 20%. October is around 9%, and November is 3%. (3) Daily Feeding Amount: Based on the monthly allocation, adjust the daily amount across three periods—early, middle, and late. From March to August, feed 80% in the first half, 100% in the middle, and 120% in the latter part of the month. Starting in September, adjust to 120% in the middle and 80% toward the end. Method Two: Determine the daily feeding amount based on the number of fish ponds. When water temperatures range between 15°C and 20°C, feed 1% to 3% of the fish’s body weight. If the temperature exceeds 20°C, increase the amount to 3% to 5%. Method Three: Observe the fish’s feeding behavior to decide the daily amount. This method is simple and effective. After feeding, if the fish finish within 2 to 3 hours or leave 20% of the feed, it indicates the correct amount was provided. This can be combined with Method Two—using the calculated amount as a base and adjusting based on fish behavior for optimal results. By applying these methods, fish farmers can achieve better feeding management, reduce costs, and promote healthier fish growth.
