Low-level PSA patients are not recommended for prostate imaging

Release date: 2007-04-10

Men with low PSA levels are generally not advised to undergo prostate imaging, according to recent findings from a study presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting in February 2007. The research, led by a team from the Cleveland Clinic, analyzed data from the CaPSURE database—a large observational registry containing information on over 13,000 men with biopsy-proven prostate cancer.

The study focused on patients who had undergone definitive treatment for prostate cancer but experienced biochemical failure, defined as a rising PSA level. Researchers found that among those with no symptoms and a PSA level below 5 ng/ml, the value of imaging was minimal. Dr. Toni Choueiri, a medical oncology fellow at the Cleveland Clinic, highlighted that patients with PSA levels under 5 ng/ml were significantly less likely to show positive results on imaging compared to those with higher PSA levels.

This suggests that routine imaging may not be necessary for men with low PSA after successful treatment, especially if they remain asymptomatic. The findings were presented at the ASCO Prostate Cancer Symposium in Kissimmee, Florida, and offer important insights into the management of prostate cancer survivors. By focusing on patient outcomes and minimizing unnecessary procedures, this research helps guide more personalized and effective care strategies.
