Low-level PSA patients are not recommended for prostate imaging

Release date: 2007-04-10

In 2007, a significant study was presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting in Kissimmee, Florida, suggesting that prostate imaging is not typically recommended for men with low PSA levels following definitive treatment for prostate cancer. The research, conducted by a team from the Cleveland Clinic, analyzed data from the CaPSURE database, which includes over 13,000 patients. According to the findings, patients who have experienced biochemical failure after prostate cancer treatment but show no symptoms and have a PSA level below 5 ng/ml are unlikely to benefit from imaging tests. This conclusion was based on long-term observational data collected through the Prostate Strategy Urologic Research Program. Dr. Toni Choueiri, a researcher at the Cleveland Clinic, highlighted that patients with PSA levels under 5 ng/ml were nine times more likely to have negative results on imaging scans compared to those with higher PSA levels. As a result, the study suggests that imaging may offer limited value in such cases, particularly when patients are asymptomatic. These findings have influenced clinical guidelines, emphasizing the importance of considering PSA levels when deciding on further diagnostic procedures after prostate cancer treatment.
