Greenhouse cucumber, rice, spinach planting
In recent years, Beigou Town in Xinyi City has actively promoted the efficient cultivation of cucumbers, rice, and spinach in early spring greenhouses. Farmers in the area have achieved impressive yields—3,500 to 4,000 kg of cucumbers, 600 kg of rice, and 1,500 kg of spinach per mu. This high productivity translates into an annual net income of 7,000 to 8,000 yuan per mu, significantly boosting local farmers' livelihoods.
For cucumber farming, the town focuses on paddy fields with rich soil and good drainage and irrigation systems. High-yield and cold-resistant varieties such as Changchun Honeysuckle and Green King are commonly used. In early February, large arch greenhouses covering 0.4 to 0.5 mu are set up. Farmers apply 2,500 kg of organic manure and 50 kg of compound fertilizer per mu as base fertilizer, along with 15 kg of urea. Seedlings are started in mid-February and transplanted in early March. Twenty days before planting, the greenhouse is prepared with a spacing of 70 cm between rows and 50 cm between plants, resulting in about 4,500 plants per acre. After planting, mulch is applied, and temperature and ventilation are carefully managed based on weather conditions. By May, the plastic film is removed, and the crops are transitioned to open-air management. Farmers pay close attention to controlling diseases like downy mildew and gray mold, with harvesting typically ending around June 20.
For rice, varieties such as Xudao No. 3, Xudao No. 4, and Yanjing No. 8 are selected for their high yield and disease resistance. Before sowing, seeds are soaked or treated with 100 grams of imidacloprid. The bed-draft and flooding technique is used, with planting done before and after May 5. Farmers focus on cultivating strong seedlings and preventing excessive growth. By late June, the planting is complete, with 25,000 to 28,000 holes per acre. Throughout the growing season, population cultivation techniques are applied. Special attention is given to managing pests like rice stripe disease, blast, and leaf rollers. Harvesting takes place at the end of October.
Spinach cultivation follows a similar pattern, with drought- and cold-resistant, fast-growing varieties like Shuangcheng Tip Leaf and Qingdao Spinach being preferred. About 5 to 6 kg of seeds are sown per plot, approximately 15 days before rice harvest. The fields are watered and protected from rain during this period. After rice is harvested, 2,000 kg of compost is added per acre to cover the soil and protect the young spinach plants. Urea is applied 20 to 30 days before harvest, along with proper watering and the use of small arch greenhouses for insulation. Spinach is harvested in batches around New Year’s Day, with the final harvest concluding by the end of January. This diversified approach not only maximizes land use but also ensures a steady income for farmers throughout the year.
